Choosing the Right Battery for the Job

There are three different classes of Energy Storage Systems (‘ESS’).
Hybrid ESS, such as the Enphase, allows you to store your energy and use it later. The amount of energy you store is optional.
Off Grid ESS are designed to deliver all of your energy needs, 24 hours per day so they need a mighty battery and inverter coupled with a large solar array.
Hybrid Back-up ESS are somewhere in the middle.
95% of the time they’re operating as a hybrid, storing your solar energy to use at night. On the rare occasion of a blackout the battery will be asked to provide full load for your house, or at least a reasonable percentage.
The Simpliphi battery is rugged enough and simple enough to act as a hybrid and deliver large loads in back-up mode.
If the blackout lasts for more than a few hours, you’ll want the system to recharge from your solar. Most ‘back-up’ systems don’t, meaning once your battery is flat, you’re out of power until the grid returns.
The Zeus Appollo Z21 inverter gives you a seamless changeover from grid to battery power, with up to 4.6kW of power to your dedicated circuits. It can charge the Simpliphi batteries with solar energy and supply your loads with solar energy if the black-out is during daylight hours.
Normally it operates as a hybrid, supplying your loads and charging your battery with solar energy, then exporting the excess solar energy when the battery is full. Evening house loads are supplied from the battery until the battery is flat, the loads are then supplied from the grid until the following morning.

The SimpliPhi Battery

The most important component of an ESS is the battery.
The PHI 3.4kWh 60 Amp deep-cycle Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery is optimised with proprietary cell architecture, power electronics, BMS and assembly methods. It is modular, lightweight and scalable for installations that range from kWh to MWh. The PHI3.4™ is warranted against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ten years or for 10,000 cycles on a prorated basis, whichever comes first.
“We wanted to capture in our company name what our technology does for energy storage,” says Catherine Von Burg, SimpliPhi’s President and CEO. “Our name incorporates ‘Phi’, the Greek mathematic symbol for the Golden Ratio, because that explains what our technology actually does: it will simplify your power, whether in conjunction with, or independent of, the grid.
